Let's go!

Welcome to the dream worlds of Infinisomnia!

The idea for these stories came to me a few years ago. The first draft was a simple short story based on Sherlock Holmes. That was the birth of these stories, although in this draft the journeys into the dream worlds still happened with a travel machine.

Then the idea lay dormant in a folder on my hard drive for a while until I stumbled upon it again. I picked it up anew and began to thoroughly develop it. Instead of using the travel machine, the protagonists now ended up in these lucid dreams involuntarily and could no longer return at will.

A month later, I already had two short stories completed. However, since I had just written freely, the first story ended very contrived, while the second story (namely the Sherlock Holmes mystery) was much too predictable and thus lacked suspense.

I was dissatisfied with the result, but my ambition was sparked. Over the next few months, I read numerous books on writing novels, mysteries, and short stories.

I began to conceptualize the stories before writing them. I thought about scenes, plot twists, dialogues, and conflicts. I experimented with different narrative perspectives. At a time, the travel machine even returned, only to be discarded again a few months later.

I wrote stories, rewrote them, discarded them, and re-conceptualized them from scratch. Often enough, I reached a point where I wanted to give up and return to software development. But I didn’t give up.

After months of work, things suddenly started to come together. The protagonists had developed character-wise through my many exercises, so the many discarded stories were not in vain. The stories started to become coherent. Scenes emerged, and I began to develop a sense of timing. Of course, it’s all far from perfect and professional. But as they say, the journey is the goal.

After far too long a period of experimenting, I have now found the courage to publish the first story.

I have ideas for more stories. Two are finished, three more exist in a rough draft and are waiting to be completed. In this blog, I will also share my experiences as a hobby writer and autodidact with you.

Now I hope that you will enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing.
